REDDITCH Community Amateur Boxing Club’s Leo Fanthome claimed a stunning victory when he joined Nottingham School of Boxing fighters as they took Denmark by storm at the weekend.
The boxers travelled to the Felsted Box Cup tournament to take part in competitive bouts and train with international boxers and coaches over the course of the weekend.
The trip was a real experience for the England team, some of whom had never travelled abroad before, and allowed them to gain the opportunity to demonstrate their skills among some of the finest international boxers.
The set-up was impressive and the level of boxing was exceptional as the event ran with ease as Fanthome and the team entered into the event with competitive bouts.
One of the main highlights was the performance of Fanthome who demonstrated exceptional grit and endurance against a heavier, strong Norwegian opponent.
The bout proved to be a real crowd-pleaser as the two lads engaged in a great display of boxing and pure determination.
The Redditch boxer stayed focused and took all three rounds, nearly stopping his opponent in the last round with a standing count as his accurate jab and fast and furious combinations proved too much for the Norwegian boxer.
Fanthome’s humility and discipline shone through as he showed respect for his opponent after securing the win and his delighted RCABC coach Sarah Lee said: “Leo’s opponent was stronger than we had anticipated, but Leo dug deep and showed great courage.
“Winning his bout was a credit to all his hard work and hours spent preparing for this event.”
Fanthome shared the stage with Nottingham’s very own junior national champion Bryer Wheatley who schooled a more experienced, heavier opponent throughout three rounds of exceptional boxing.
He delivered skilful combinations and executed his talent with pure spirit and grace. Wheatley, who appeared not to even break sweat, made his opponent from Copenhagen look like a novice as he pushed forward and held the centre of the ring to win the respect of everyone at the event.
The trip was an amazing experience for all concerned including coaches Sarah Lee and Matthew Beaman, who had the opportunity to coach and share knowledge with international boxers and coaches.
Nottingham coach Marcellus Baz organised the trip and continues to support the Redditch club in forging these international links.
“We anticipate many more events like this and look forward to working with Redditch again in the future,” said Baz.
